My first clear and distinctive memory of Dragonfly acting as a Power Animal in my life was sometime around 1967 when I was a sophomore in college. I was "experiencing" the New Jersey Pine Barrens, which were about an hour from where I lived, with several of my friends. My home environment was pretty prosaic with a small pond and mini-forested county park at the end of the street. Much of the wildcrafted magical qualities had left the area; however, when they had chopped down most of the old growth trees to build a new housing development and paved over all the adjoining farmland turning it into a parking lot for a shopping mall. It had been a long time since I had felt the pristine rawness of nature. As we explored explored around the reedy perimeter of a marshy pond, all of a sudden I was visited by a choir of Dragonflies. They flew alongside me for awhile and communicated some pretty profound thoughts about universal realities and Dreaming New Dreams for humanity. Everything kind of glowed and nature was alive with a pristine majesty. I changed in many subtle ways that day. Now flash forward to the years 2000 and 2001. I have been thinking about relocating for a year or two now to Florida from Portland, Oregon, where I've grown weary of the overcast skies and constant dreary rain.
Cross country moves are not
to be taken lightly since the East and West Coast of the United States are
fundamentally different in many ways. It is almost as if the West Coast
resonates with Ancient Lemuria and the East Coast resonates with Ancient
Atlantis. Apples and Oranges. There is no perfect place to live but my body
elemental longs for a more steady diet of blue skies and warm balmy days.
Dragonfly was a regular visitor, encouraging me to lay the groundwork, to plan, to Dream New Dreams. Everytime Dragonfly appeared I felt nurtured by Spirit and inspired to ponder alternative futures for myself, as well as, to instigate change. So I started to process the relocation with my friends, talking about it at work to see how it felt overall, surfing the internet looking at places to live in the area of Florida that I was most drawn to, and finally vacationing there to confirm whether I resonated with the area or not. Every step of the way Dragonfly was there with me, helping me, guiding me, reassuring me, tantalizing me, and prodding me. Dragonfly was waiting to welcome me to my new home in northeast Florida when I arrived, visiting regularly as a trusted friend and advisor. When I decided to change and expand the old website Dragonfly was there as well. For a few days Butterfly and Dragonfly competed with each other for my attention. Both of them expressed an interest in being one of the primary totems for the formatting of the new website. Butterfly wanted to transform the old website. Dragonfly wanted me to Dream a New Dream by creating a totally new website. If I went to the post office to pick up the mail, Butterfly would flitter by to say hello and ask how the transformation of the old website was going. Then Dragonfly would land on my windshield and insist that I really needed to Dream a New Dream. When I drove from the post office to the beach for a walk by the ocean, Butterfly reappeared and flew around the car saying, all you need to do is transform the old website. As soon as Butterfly moved on Dragonfly reappeared and very adamantly reiterated, you really need to Dream a New Dream, so "I" should be your primary website totem. So how did it all turn out? Well many months later, I gave up on the old website and Dreamt A New Dream, creating a totally different website. The journey was an often difficult and tiring one for me but it turned out to be the right pathway for me to take afterall, at least at that time. So Dragonfly anchored the welcoming and inclusive energies of the website when it was called Spirit Songs. What became of Butterfly the transformation totem? Well Butterfly still was a frequent visitor. Butterfly also welcomed travellers to the Spirit Songs website and appeared in many symbolic pictures and helped in the many areas that focused on regeneration and transformation.
Then I once again relocated in the
spring of 2006 back to the Portland, Oregon area. The website name and look had
once again been transformed. Spirit Songs morphed into Blessings Cornucopia.
Later in 2006, the website was reformatted once again and in 2007 only a yellow
butterfly was showcased on the web pages. Dragonfly will continue to
remain a powerful ally in my personal life. So if you are looking for a stalwart friend to go the distance with you and guide you
safely around the shoals of life, look now further than Dragonfly the
Dreamweaver. As a Power Animal, Dragonfly is a powerful ally when the only
viable way forward is to become the Dreamer.
