Sparkling sparrow song has often blessed my life with its irrepressible optimism, bringing a smile to even the cloudiest of days. After my mother died in 1978, I moved back to the family home in southern New Jersey for awhile. One day when I was sitting out on the porch, I noticed a frantic rustling sound coming from the downspout next door. I went over to investigate and Sparrow spoke to me telling me he was trapped inside. Disturbed to hear about his predicament, I banged on the neighbors door and asked her to mount a rescue mission with me. She was not pleased but at my insistence we opened up the downspout and removed the wire leaf catcher she had inserted. Sparrow slowly made his way out and flew to safety. I was pleasantly surprised when later that morning. Sparrow flew nearby and once he got my attention, thanked me profusely for my help. His expression reminded me of a smiley face. He radiated so much love it was almost as if Sparrow was one big sunny heart. I was deeply touched by his gratitude and the way he expressed it. How did I know Sparrow was a he?, you might be thinking. Well a few days later he came back with his mate and they coupled tantrically right in front of me. It felt tantric because there was so much spirit love flowing and glowing around the couple as they mated. Even though I was feeling a little voyeuristic and wanted to look away so they could couple in privacy, Sparrow made it clear that he wanted me to observe their mating dance to see love in action, creating new life with purity of intent, devotion, and perfect harmonic resonance. Their auras entwined in blissful embrace. I could feel intense love surrounding them, radiating from their heart chakras from several feet away. The wave of kundalini fire that washed over me acted as an alchemical catalyst awakening my own inner yearning to experience the unity of harmonic resonance.
It was powerful Spirit magic, the magic of the Divine Union of the male and
female. That is how Sparrows continue the lineage of their Storysingers and why
the Fairies cherish their friendship so much. I thanked Sparrow for the blessing
and gift of insight into the tantric mating practices of the "Bird Bards".
They flew off to come back another day to sing their songs of joy and
thanksgiving in the bushes nearby, the sacred melodies of clan and kinship that
keep the hearth fires burning bright.
Since them Sparrows have continued to boldly made their presence known in my life, courageously going where no other birds have ventured before. In the spring of 2001, I was waiting for my car to be serviced on a Saturday morning. I chose to sit at a small table by the window where I could write some of my thoughts down. After being there about three hours, two sparrows sang very loudly to get my attention. When I looked up one was staring at me through the window. Then it sang a series of sparrow sentences and when I nodded it flew away. As it departed, I sensed a feeling of enormous satisfaction emanating from the small bird. What startled me the most was that I actually understood what he had said. He had been cavorting about in this large bush with his mate in a sea of concrete and pavement. I have been wrestling with a desire to move somewhere else, where there was more nature and less noise and pollution, out of the Portland, OR, metro area and someplace more secluded like Mt Shasta, CA. Yet, it did not feel like the time was right for me to make a transition since I was still spreading so much goodwill to so many others in so many ways everyday. The sparrow had attuned to my dilemma and gave me these words of wisdom, "There is beauty and divinity all around you if you just look for it. This bush is a beautiful island of serenity for me and my mate. Here we sing glories to the God and Goddess for the verdant greenery of our home. We purify the surrounding ethers with the lilting resonance of our voices. Find your own sacred space no matter how small. Fill it with plants, stones, flowers and natural things that foster love, light, and peace. Then you will be able to enjoy life, even in the city."
So I took the "Sparrowly Advice" to heart and brought many new plants, flowers, baskets and
other natural things into my living space and I did feel more content and
grounded. What touched me the most about this encounter of the animal totem kind
was that Sparrow knew my thoughts and feelings and showed genuine concern for my well
being. Remember always that within each animal dwells the spirit of an
elemental. They are conscious beings who have been in existence for awhile and have much wisdom to share with you if you open your heart and mind to
receive it.
