Astrologically the Moon has been designated as the ruler of the Astrological Sun Sign of Cancer. The Moon as a planetary body and the sign Cancer have long been considered feminine, watery, and emotional. The Moon affects the tides and feelings tend to run high during the Full Moon, bringing visions of howling wolves to mind. Although you can be born when the Moon either in a masculine (for example, Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), or, a feminine sign (for example, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), the Moon has more often than not been associated with the Goddess energies. Yet . . . what about all those ancient drawings depicting a Man In The Moon? And, the Germanic and Nordic traditions where the Sun is viewed as feminine and the Moon as masculine? Maybe since both the Sun and the Moon are circular like the Yin/Yang Symbol, they also exhibit both masculine and feminine qualities which fluctuate proportionally as they flow about in the Circle Dance of Life. Each individual also has character traits and qualities of personality that are both masculine and feminine in nature. The word "moody" refers to fluctuating emotions and changes of mood. Some of these moods might be considered more masculine and some more feminine than others. Men were usually the aggressive warriors and women the compassionate caretakers. So much so that men of peace like Gandhi or women of valor like Joan of Arc stood out as iconic beacons over the years.
For a long time statistics showed that a lot more men died of heart attacks than
women. Although the gap has narrowed somewhat more recently with so many women
spending more and more time away from the home in pursuit of their careers.
Those who take a holistic approach to health, (viewing mind, body, and spirit
as casually integrative) have postulated that one of the underlying psychological
and emotional causes of the dis-ease cancer (Moon rules the Sign of Cancer)
might be repressed emotions, and unreleased or unexpressed feelings of
bitterness, fury, rage, hatred, and anger that have been contained by turning
them inward.
Men who are focused on acquiring power, concentrate their attention mainly on their solar plexus region in the area of the stomach and rarely let their heart rule their head. Over time their heart chakra area becomes developmentally stagnate and congested.. Even though they love someone dearly they may only express hatred towards them outwardly because of some real or imagined affront to their ego. These men are out of sync with their own inner emotional rhythms. Women at work may go into their boss's office meaning to express their anger at some unfairness towards them on the job and find themselves bursting into tears instead. They may be handed a box of Kleenex, but, the fires of their righteous indignation which might have acted as a catalyst for constructive action have now been extinguished by the flood of their tears. In both instances, the masculine side needed to be realigned and balanced with the feminine. Cycles change, Moon energies and geometric aspects to the natal Moon in an astrology chart are the key to balancing your masculine side if you're female, and, your feminine side if you're male. The Moon has both deep craters and old highlands. Like the tides of the ocean changing the view of the beach everyday, the Moon also has many phases, many faces, many landscapes. The Moon is a study in contrasts of light and shadow. One of these landscapes occurs when the Earth reflects light "Earthshine" like the "Moonshine" reflected by the Moon. Earthshine is when the dark side of the Moon has a faint ashen glow every 29.5 Earth days when the Sun sets on the side of the Moon facing the Earth and the landscape is illuminated by reflected light from Earth. Interestingly, astronomers call "Earthshine", "The Old Moon in the New Moon's Arms", which speaks to us of regenerative transitions. Leonardo believed that the reflection from the Earth seas at this time bathed the Moon in pale light.
Perhaps the placement of the Moon in an Astrology Chart is reflective of a
mirroring back of emotional patterns that need to be cleansed, and, of shadowy
areas of our unconscious that need to be bathed in the light of Gaia's more
nurturing energies. One might look at the Moon's North and South Nodes, the sign
and house the Moon is located in, as well as, stress aspects to these points in
the natal chart, along with any significant transits impacting those chart
points to determine what shadow qualities of the masculine are being illuminated
for balanced expression, or, what stagnant emotions are being bathed in the
regenerative waters of earthy equilibrium.
